Sports floors are made from traditional wood flooring solutions. The only difference is that they have additional support under them to enable the floor to spring slightly. This helps reduce the strain on the bodies of the athletes, counteracting injuries in return.

There are many choices of materials or systems used as undercarriages for sports floors. One is a thick foam underlay, which has an approximate recommended measure of 10 millimetres or thicker. It is placed over the whole floor area as a cushion to create that “bounce” effect. Another flooring technology used to create sports floors is the cradle system. This is often used with battens, a stuffing made of sheets or rolls of synthetic fibre or cotton wool, to create plastic supports. The supports are usually manufactured specifically for flooring used to facilitate bounce and movement, therefore creating the “spring.”

Meanwhile, it must be noted that most sports floors are made from engineered floor boards. These engineered floors are usually manufactured using a simple click system, enabling them to be laid and fitted with little (or sometimes even without) use of nails. This is to ensure that there is less movement in the boards by preventing them from warping, cupping or gapping, which are hazards that can put athletes at risk for injuries while they are playing sports.
